Known worldwide as the 'Mexican Pipeline,' Zicatela Beach in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico is a legendary stretch of golden sand that produces some of the most powerful and perfect beach break barrels on the planet. For decades, this iconic wave has drawn professional surfers, big wave riders, and ocean enthusiasts from every corner of the globe. The raw power of the Pacific Ocean meets the steep sandbanks of Puerto Escondido here, creating a spectacle that is as mesmerizing to watch from the shore as it is thrilling to ride. Whether you are an experienced charger looking for the wave of your life, or a spectator wanting to witness world-class surfing while sipping a cold drink on the sand, Zicatela is the beating heart of Puerto Escondido's surf culture.
Zicatela is not a wave for the faint of heart. It is a heavy, fast-breaking beach break that requires experience, commitment, and respect. The wave breaks close to the shore over shallow sandbars, creating deep, cavernous barrels that are heavily sought after by advanced surfers. The sheer force of the water here means broken boards are a common sight, but the reward of making a deep Zicatela barrel is unparalleled. Even if you aren't paddling out, spending an early morning watching the local and international pros navigate these massive tubes is a humbling and awe-inspiring experience.
While there are waves year-round, the true Mexican Pipeline awakens during the Southern Hemisphere swell season, which runs from late April through September. During these months, massive swells generated by winter storms near Antarctica travel thousands of miles before unloading their energy onto Zicatela's sandbanks. This is when the wave reaches its famous double-to-triple overhead heights. If you prefer more manageable, fun-sized waves, the shoulder seasons (March-April and October-November) offer excellent conditions with lighter winds and beautifully shaped barrels without the extreme size of the summer swells.
Because of its power, Zicatela is strictly for advanced and expert surfers. However, Puerto Escondido is incredibly accommodating to surfers of all levels. Just a short drive or a long walk down the beach is La Punta, a softer, peeling left-hand point break that is much more forgiving and ideal for intermediate surfers. For absolute beginners, the sheltered coves of Playa Carrizalillo and Puerto Angelito offer gentle, rolling waves perfect for learning. Our on-site staff at Casa Leah can easily help you arrange professional surf lessons, board rentals, and transport to these beginner-friendly spots, ensuring you have a safe and unforgettable first experience on a board.
