    Manialtepec Lagoon Bioluminescence

Just 20 minutes north of Puerto Escondido lies the Manialtepec Lagoon, a sprawling coastal ecosystem that transforms into a magical glowing landscape at night. During certain times of the year, microscopic dinoflagellates in the water emit a bright blue bioluminescent glow when disturbed. Taking a boat tour or kayaking through the lagoon under the stars is a surreal, once-in-a-lifetime experience. You can even jump in and swim, watching the water light up around your body.

When to go: Nighttime (best during a new moon for maximum darkness). Duration: 2-3 hours.

    Chacahua National Park

For a true escape into nature, Chacahua National Park is an absolute must. Located about an hour and a half away by car and boat, this protected reserve consists of vast lagoons, intricate mangrove tunnels, and a pristine, seemingly endless beach. You can take a guided boat tour through the mangroves to spot crocodiles, iguanas, and hundreds of bird species. End the day at the beach where the lagoon meets the ocean, eating fresh seafood at a local palapa and watching one of the best sunsets in Oaxaca.
